July 25th 2017: Research Methods – Doing Literature Review

Below are videos on both literature review. All of them we taken from YouTube.

Please go through some or all of them to give you an idea of what Literature Review is.

Also please go to Youtube or any online site to find other videos to help you understand. For these videos, please give me the links in the comment section of this post.

After viewing the videos, please answer these two questions individually in the comments section of this blog. They are:

(2) What are the main components of the Literature Review Chapter?

I want you to write a much as possible from your understanding watching these videos and other videos of your choice based on “Literature Review” search in Youtube.

I will feedback to you when you complete the write up. You have till Sunday July 30th 12 pm to complete this.

Further discussion and refinement to your Assignment on Literature Review will take place in our next face-to-face class on Aug 2nd Thursday at 2 pm.

      Q 1: Literature review is basically your understanding and your ideas on the topic which you have selected for your research. In other words, it’s a process where we read journals, books, conference papers or dissertation on the selective topic and tries to find holes or gaps in there so that we can come up with the new ideas according to our understanding.
      There are two types of Research
      i. Contextualizes a research study
      ii. Summarize current literature on a particular topic.

    Literature review is a written as a section with a longer paper or thesis chapter or as separate assignment. It must demonstrate many essential academic skills, which maybe one of the requirements for writing a literature review such as to read carefully, to ensure that you understand how to analyze and synthesize theories and findings, to make sure that your arguments about the research body on the topic well organize and most important is to perform research. Besides this, by assigning a literature review, project supervisor or lecturer expects that it will develop detailed knowledge about an important topic and it will recognize the dynamic nature of learning within a particular field of study. It must also survey a range of sources on a particular topic and analyze how researchers have examined and explained this particular topic. Lastly, it must present a focused and organized argument about the state of knowledge on the topic, considering how research has progressed, evaluating debates, and identifying unanswered questions.
    The purposed of the literature review, basically, the content of the literature review must be express to the readers with an idea of popular theories in the field, gaps and intervention, and inconsistent perception in the research, analysis and overview of the current state of research on a particular topic must be provided, to make sure this will be the guide or help to justify of my chosen or interest area of research if why you choose this kind of area of research and lastly the research work should be enable to have an comparative related studies from the previous research.

    The main components of the Literature Review Chapter are the following:
    Background information. On this section, the topic should introduce precisely for better understanding for the readers, scope and organisation will definitely describes. It also have a review past and present literature for clarification of its purpose of the topic.
    Theory. On this section, there must be a sample or model of all research in order to have a basis or outline of the research and the key point should be integrated because some topics are not related. Also, suitable implication of the topic will covers and having strong linkages to your topic with other topics to asupport/conclude to your research.
    Review of literature on instruments. On this section, present an evidence to support to your interest field of chosen study topic including the reliability and validity estimates and description of samples.
    Summary. On this section, focus on the clearly brief explanation of knowledge and instrument being use in your research. And, the full detailed background investigation must be put in this area in order to know the readers that you clearly examine this study for endorsement.

    Nice job all! You have captured the essence of what literature review is about. Another thing to add. Literature review is an argument put forward by the researcher using supported documentations and theories to prove his or her own viability of the research. In other words, it provides the foundation and evidence that your research can contribution to the field.

    Thus, having background studies to inform what has been done in the field and a theoretical framework to provide the underpinning of the research being done is crucial. It makes your research research and a continuation from existing research.

    It is not all about citation of other people’s work but it is about providing reasons to why your study is valid.
